Immuno-Haematological Characteristics of Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients in Asymptomatic Steady State

چکیده
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate some immuno-haematological characteristics of Nigerian sickle cell disease (SCD) patients in asymptomatic steady state. Material and Methods: Thirty asymptomatic SCD patients and 30 apparently healthy ageand sex-matched non-sickle cell disease individuals were investigated. The packed cell volume, white blood cells and differentials, and platelet counts were done on automated blood cells counter, while the ESR was determined by Westergren’s technique. C3 activator, C1-INH, IgA, IgG and IgM were estimated by the single radial immuno-diffusion method. Results: The SCD patients had elevated ESR and a significantly higher total leukocyte count compared to the controls (t= 5.22, p= 0.000). A positive correlation was found between ESR and C3 activator (r= +0.449, p= 0.047), and between ESR and serum IgM levels (r= +0.531, p= 0.016). Serum levels of IgA and C3 activator were significantly higher in SCD subjects (IgA: t= 2.47, p= 0.019; C3 activator: t= 2.79, p= 0.009), while the levels of C1-INH and IgM, though higher in SCD subjects, were not significant. Conclusions: It could be concluded from this study that immune dysfunction are evident in Nigerian SCD patients.

Antioxidant Enzymes and Acute Phase Proteins Correlate with Marker of Lipid Peroxide in Adult Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients
Objective(s) Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic haemolytic anaemia. Haemoglobin S containing red blood cells may be susceptible to oxidative stress due to imbalance between production of reactive oxygen species and the countering effect of the various antioxidants present in the body. Materials and Methods We evaluated some antioxidant enzymes which include gl...

Sickle cell disorder is the most important genetic haematological disease that affects the people of black African descent. About 2% of all babies born to Nigerian parents have sickle cell anaemia (1). The distribution of indigenous sickle cell disorder coincides with the distribution of falciparum malaria. Possession of sickle cell trait confers a natural protection against death from malaria ...

Background: Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin causing myriad of pathology including anemia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the baseline values of steady state hemoglobin and packed cell volume as a guide to managing the early recognition of hemolytic crises in sickle cell anemia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the sickle cell patients atte...

Abstract Background: Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography results have not been previously studied in among Iranian sickle cell anemia patients. The present study was performed to evaluate the pattern of intracranial flow velocities among Iranian children with sickle cell anemia and the hematological parameters that can affect the time-averaged mean of maximum velocity in major intracranial...

Background: Sickle cell disease (HbSS) is a major health problem in Nigeria and ma-laria has been implicated as a leading cause of morbidity/mortality in sickle cell disease patients. Few reasons were put forward to explain the observed morbidity/mortality of HbSS subjects due to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria. Objectives: To determine the level of immunoglobulin classes (IgM, Ig...
